Strawberry margarita? Sure. Berries into the blender. Raspberry? Yes, same thing.

Blackberry. Uh, no.

The seeds, the seeds. You can’t just put the blackberries into that blender with the booze. Those seeds will percolate onto your tongue and destroy the joy of a margarita. No one likes to drink grit.

The solution is simple. A good margarita has a secret ingredient anyway: simple syrup. So, just make a blackberry syrup, with the seeds sieved out, and you have the pathway to a grand beverage.

Blackberries really are, well, deep purple. Blackberry syrup, with its blend of berries and simple syrup, provides a dilution in color to a rich crimson, truly cardinal, red.

The flavor? Blackberry and tequila in a doubly smoky blend.

Blackberry Syrup and Margarita

Yield: 1 ½ cups of syrup, enough for 4 beverages; 1 margarita below

Ingredients:

For the syrup:

  • ¾ cup simple syrup
  • 2 cups blackberries

For a single margarita:

3 ounces tequila

1 ½ ounces orange liqueur

4 ounces blackberry syrup

Juice of one lemon

Handful of ice, or more to suit your pleasure

Preparation:

Make the syrup by adding the simple syrup and berries into a blender. Process until smooth, at least 1 minute. Pour the mix through a sieve to remove the seeds and “muck” you don’t want to drink.

Rinse the blender.

To make the drink, put everything in your rinsed blender. Add enough ice to achieve the consistency you desire.

Pour. Drink. Enjoy.
