Here’s another beverage idea, targeted especially to anyone hosting a Super Bowl party. This is a non-alcoholic treat that few of us ever make: limeade. When I saw this recipe in James Peterson’s new Kitchen Simple I wanted to try it immediately. Peterson is the unsurpassed author of award winning cookbooks dealing with soups, sauces, and meats. If he’s got a recipe for a classic beverage, I wanted to try it.
My worry, of course, is whether it would be sweet enough. It is, and probably will be for you, too. Suzen found it, naturally, too sweet, but loves cutting it with club soda.
As the basis for a low-alcohol beverage, you can serve this with a splash of vodka, rum, or gin. You can fill a flute halfway up with sparkling wine then complete the pour with this limeade.
Unlike the limeades from the freezer section of your grocery store, this limeade has pure flavor with no “cardboard” overtones.
Besides this limeade, the blog is filled with delicious lemonade recipes, too. Just use the search panel and you’ll find more citrus delight.
Homemade Limeade
Yield: 4 large servings
Ingredients:
- 17 limes
- ¾ cup sugar
- 3 cups water
- Ice
Preparation:
Scrub the limes with hot water and detergent (this eliminates the wax) and rinse thoroughly. Take the zest off 4 of the limes, avoiding the pith as best you can.
Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring frequently to dissolve the sugar. Add the zest, simmer for 15 minutes, and let cool. Strain.
Squeeze 16 of the limes and combine the juice with the syrup. Cut the remaining lime into wedges. Serve with plenty of ice. Garnish with lime wedges.
