The first Oreo cookie was created in New York City one hundred years ago [actually on March 6]. That old Nabisco building now houses the Chelsea Market, a marvelous floor of food stores that many tourists visit.
The Oreo gem now is offered in over 150 countries. And the shapes can differ. In Canada, you can get a square one. Someday in New York, perhaps, someday.
$1.5 billion is spent on Oreos around the world each year. I could not begin to say how many Oreos I have consumed over time. Surely it is more than 10. Okay, over 1,000. I think Oreos may have provided us more comfort that any other item in our pantries. Or medicine cabinets.
Happy Birthday, Oreo. I’m going to toast you with a glass of milk and one or two of you.
Or more. Lots more.
