wc-Black-Martini

In Tomatomania! authors Scott Daigre and Jenn Garbee offer this Dirty Martini. I must say it looks a tad like a Bloody Mary but it uses only tomato water, not tomato juice or V8. There is Tabasco and Worcestershire here, plus celery salt on the rim. No horseradish, but don’t let your imagination be stifled.

This will be a grand brunch beverage to be sure but any evening is worthy of a tomato tasting. To garnish, it is suggested you use a quick pickled cherry tomato. Where to find one of those? You can find the recipe right here!

Black Martini

Yield: 1 cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed tomato water, from a black tomato variety if you have one, chilled
  • 2 dashes Tabasco or other hot sauce
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice, lemon reserved
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • 5 tablespoons good-quality vodka, such as Ketel One
  • A generous ½ teaspoon celery salt, to rim the glass
  • 2 fresh or quick-pickled cherry tomatoes

Preparation:

Place a martini glass in the freezer to chill for 5 minutes.

Mix together the tomato water, Tabasco, Worcestershire, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a small glass.

Pour the vodka into an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake or stir, whatever your preference (we know what Sean Connery would do), until the vodka is well chilled.

Sprinkle the celery salt on a small plate. Rub the reserved lemon around the rim. Turn the glass upside down and dip it in the salt to lightly coat the rim of the glass.

Strain the vodka into the chilled glass. Very slowly add the tomato water mixture so some of the liquid sinks to the bottom of the martini glass. Garnish with the cherry tomatoes and serve immediately.
