Rachel de Thample has this lovely book, Vital Tonics & Soothing Teas, filled with quite British beverage ideas. She notes that in prior centuries, doctors used to carry jars of cayenne pepper for cardiac emergencies. That’s why you make this beverage with just ¼ teaspoon of cayenne. If you drink this and are not yet fully awake, you will be.
It’s intense. And you may be adjusted the amount of pepper or lime juice. Maybe more honey?
Lime and Cayenne Shot
Yield: 1 shot
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Juice of ½ lime
- ¼ cup water
- ½ teaspoon raw honey or maple syrup
In a glass, whisk the cayenne with the lime juice, top up with the water, then whisk in the honey or maple syrup
Knock it back first thing in the morning, follow it with a glass of cold water, and feel your energy levels rise.
